Teen Read Week is October 14th through 20th, but here at The Hub, we’re celebrating for ten days so we can bring you interviews, guest posts, videos, and more with each of the authors whose books made this year’s Teens’ Top Ten. Today we feature Maggie Stiefvater, whose book The Scorpio Races is #8 on this year’s list.

The Scorpio Races (a 2012 Printz Honor book) was one of my favorite reads on this year’s Teens’ Top Ten nominee list. It combined the perfect mix of legend and lore, the right amount of tension and romance, and the most terrifying creatures a reader could ever fall in love with for a memorable and exciting read. Before reading though, my first experience with The Scorpio Races was the book trailer.

The beating drums. The haunting pipes. The incredible stop-motion art. Watching the video immediately creates the sound and world of Puck and Sean and the legendary sea horses, the capall uisce — and it’s all entirely created by Stiefvater herself. From creating the art, to composing and performing original music, to filming, she creates unique and gorgeous videos for her books and lets fan see into her artistic process.

Her latest video is the trailer for her newest release, The Raven Boys. A massive undertaking she chronicles on her website, Stiefvater used a traditional animation style (her previous trailers were stop-motion) and hand-drew all the images in colored pencil. The effect is ethereal and fantastic, again transporting potential readers directly into the world of Blue and Gansey before they ever open a page.

Congratulations to Maggie Stiefvater on The Scorpio Races being voted a 2012 Teens’ Top Ten, and thank you, Maggie, for making such thoughtful, wonderful and unique book trailers. I always look forward to the next book and it’s trailer. And yes, I’m still waiting for that Kraken romance.
